Surroundings
Beautiful landscapes, cultural tradition,
art, and history are all the integral parts of Ragusano identity
reflecting Sicily’s unique heritage. UNESCO has recently
classified three of these monumental cities, Ragusa, Modica
and Scicli, as World Heritage Sites.
A few kilometers away from the Locanda, you will find:
DONNAFUGATA CASTLE
with its gothic-venezian façade and beautiful loggia.
Its prestigious interior overlooks a giant garden full of
various species of trees and plants, as well as a small temple,
caves and a stone labyrinth.
RAGUSA
is the capital of the province. Located on the southern side
of the Iblei mountains, it is divided into two towns: modern
Ragusa and Ragusa Ibla. The latter is filled with medieval
monuments and elegant, Baroque-style palaces. Perched picturesquely
on the top of a hill, this is the oldest, and most charming
center in the province.
MARINA DI RAGUSA
is also part of the administrative territory of Ragusa. The
Marina is the best equipped and most popular seaside resorts
in all of south-east of Sicily. A dramatic expansion has taken
place in the last 15 years and the area has developed into
a small urban town.
MODICA
is one of the most picturesque towns in the province. Situated
on the hills of the Southern Iblei, the town is separated
into three urban centers: Modica Alta, perched on the top
of the hill, with houses cling to the stone; Modica Bassa
sits in the valley where two streams had formed deep gorges;
and Modica Sorda which is an area under expansion. One discovers
the town by walking through the narrow streets and climbing
the steep staircases.
SCICLI 8km
away from Modica, this town is protected by the limestone
caves that surround it. The Mediterranean Seas lays in the
horizon and creates a unique and serene setting.
ISPICA
is a pretty town of about 14,000 inhabitants. Bordering the
Siracuse province, this town is only 6km away from the sea.
The city was rebuilt after the disastrous earthquake in 1693,
and is now one of the most functional urban centers in the
province. It is characterized by its beautiful buildings and
churches, as well as its wide and straight streets.
POZZALLO
is the only sea commune in the province of Ragusa, with its
bustling beaches. The town only became important in the fourteenth
century, when the Chiaramonte family built a “Caricatore”,
around which the first quarters of the town were built. This
explains why only part of the town has the narrow streets
characteristics to Mediterranean centers. The rest of the
town is quite modern, with houses featuring elevated walkways. |
